一位教授在无意间发现了最惊骇人的末日预言，这会真的是宇宙间最后一个预言吗？儘管没人人相信他所发现的这个可怕预言，但他仍企图力挽狂澜，阻止它发生！
1959年，在波士顿一所新开办的小学，老师要求一群学生画出他们想像中的未来，然后把所有的画都放进时空胶囊中上锁，预计保存50年后才开啟，但是其中有个神秘的女孩，在她的纸上写满了密密麻麻的数字，她说是有个看不见的人轻声告诉她的。
过了半个世纪后，另一代的小学生打开时空胶囊看内容，卡雷柯斯勒（钱德勒坎特布瑞饰演）拿到了当年小女孩写满数字的纸条，结果是卡雷的天体物理学家父亲约翰柯斯勒（尼可拉斯凯吉饰演）得到了惊人的发现：这些数字準确地预言了过去50年的每一场重大灾难。约翰继续抽丝剥茧，发现这些数字还预言了另外三场灾难，其中的最后一场就是最令人毛骨悚然的世界末日。
