影片主人公布莱恩·杰克逊(詹姆斯·麦卡沃伊饰)从记事时起就想变得更聪明，他出生在艾塞克斯的工人家庭，刚刚成为布里斯托大学的一年级学生，急待证明自己的能力。在他的同乡担心他变成自大狂的同时，布莱恩正为组队参加大学挑战赛而头疼。大学挑战赛是一档英国电视游戏节目，开办于1962年，每支参赛队由4人组成，开局题目为10分，影片片名“Starter For Ten”便是由此得名。
经历了变装舞会、反种族隔离集会、脏乱的宿舍生活和大麻的飘飘欲仙之后，布莱恩恋上了两个女孩，一个是金发碧眼的漂亮宝贝、队友爱丽丝(爱丽丝·伊芙饰)，一个是有思想、充满政治意识的丽贝卡·爱波斯坦(丽贝卡·豪尔饰)。布莱恩逐渐陷于三角恋的漩涡之中，而他的单身母亲也找到了一位新丈夫，布莱恩的学业、情感和家庭都要迎接不小的挑战……
