本片根据真人故事改编。保利和布莱恩是从小一起长大的一对好友，生活在波士顿南城。由于生活所迫，从小两人就干些偷鸡摸狗、打架抢劫的勾当，并以此为生。慢慢的两人不在满足于听命自己的老大，开始独立行事，并介入毒品交易。也正因为此，两个人被警察抓到，开始5年的牢狱生涯。布莱恩作为两个孩子的爸爸在狱中反思，出狱后希望可以重新做人。他戒酒、戒毒、不再与原来的混混们来往，希望可以找到一份正经的工作来养活家人。但是社会远没有他想象的那么宽容，出狱半年他始终找不到一份像样的工作。最终与出狱的保利再次过上了混混的生涯。就在他们策划一次武装抢劫运钞车的计划时，布莱恩内心的巨大矛盾与他对孩子、妻子、家庭的愧疚使他最终放弃了这个“偏门”行业，开始继续自己平凡的一生。而保利则因为抢劫失败而被判入狱50年。
其实这只是一部极普通的北美生活片，无论从导演到演员的名气都不足以吸引眼球。但是他们选了一个不错的题材，我们是否也有同样的偏见对待周围那些出狱的人，是否可以给他们公正的对待，让他们重回社会。我想我不能！那么他们只有一条路，就是继续做原来的事情，只有这样他们才能活下去。与其这样还不如不要让他们从监狱中出来。这是一个社会问题，是一个我们必须正视的问题。
