洛杉矶FBI探员乔-坎贝尔几年间一直在追踪一个系列杀人狂大维-克里芬。变态杀手克里芬是个智商极高的家伙，他不仅躲过了警方的天罗地网，而且屡次把坎贝尔玩弄于股掌之上，这使坎贝尔的自信心饱受打击。挫折之下，坎贝尔决定迁居芝加哥，借此摆脱自己失败的过去。
但噩梦如影相随，克里芬不想停止这场的残酷游戏。他追随坎贝尔来到芝加哥。克里芬将一些独居的单身女性作为袭击目标。动手前他先把目标的照片寄给坎贝尔，如果坎贝尔在24小时内无法找到照片上的女人，24小时后这个无辜的女人便必死无疑。
杀人狂魔屡屡得手，他的猖狂几乎使坎贝尔发疯，而坎贝尔的痛苦和无助则成了杀手的杀人理由和快乐源泉。于是克里芬精心策划了最后一起谋杀案，这次，要么坎贝尔能及时阻止杀手，要么坎贝尔自身将成为杀手的最后一个“猎物”……
