【內容簡介】
1985年，來自英國的兩名登山者準備征服高達10800英尺的秘魯安第斯山Siula Grande 峰。在攀登到9000英尺時，災難發生了。一個名叫喬·辛普森的登山者不慎跌下一個陡坡，並且摔斷了右腿。在他下面是萬丈深淵，而向上又無法攀爬。他的同伴西蒙·耶茨只好用救生繩緊緊拉住他，並且在暴風雪中隨其一起下降。但在降下3000英尺時，辛普森不幸又落進了一個狹窄的冰縫中，而此刻西蒙懸在他的頭頂，而自己又卡在縫中動彈不得。經過一段時間的努力，維繫兩人生命繩子已不堪重負，隨時都有同時跌下山谷的危險，況且嚴寒已經把兩人幾乎凍僵。出於無奈和對生存的無望，耶茨只好割斷繩索，自己攀爬出陡壁，回到大本營地。就在耶茨準備撤離時，他看到了拖著傷腿回來的辛普森……
