【内容介绍】500年后，地球已经无法承受人口之重，人类不得不向银河系开拓新的生存空间，领土的争夺导致星际间战火不断。故事以马尔科姆?雷诺兹船长(内森?菲利安 饰)为中心，他是一名银河系内战中的资深军人，但他不幸地属于战败的那一方，为了生计，现在的他不得不利用他的宇宙飞船“宁静号”乾一些走私违禁品或是接送乘客之类的勾当。
由他率领的宇宙飞船组员：副船长佐伊、领航员沃什、机械师凯利、枪手杰恩等人，就像是他休戚与共的家人，虽然他们经常跟他吵架拌嘴，也不太爱服从他的命令，不过他们对他却是忠心耿耿。马尔科姆最新的工作是负责接载两位乘客：年轻的医生西蒙和他情绪不稳、拥有心电感应能力的妹妹瑞凡，但他却发现这对兄妹会为他带来很大的麻烦。
原来兄妹俩是宇宙联盟的逃犯，宇宙联盟将不择手段把他们抓回去，而本来只是在银河系边缘乾一些小勾当的宁静号组员，这次却突然发现他们被夹在两股强大势力的中间：一边是拥有强大军队的宇宙联盟，另一边则是游走在外层空间边缘、凶狠残暴的食人族掠夺者。当宁静号的组员被这两群不同的敌人追杀的同时，他们发现最可怕的危险人物也许就在宁静号上面。
