剧情
在美国纽约和加拿大魁北克省之间的空旷地带中有一个小镇，由于地处偏僻，加之美国经济的持续衰退，镇里的生活日益窘迫。小镇中的单身母亲蕾·艾迪感觉生活的压力几乎让自己窒息：丈夫嗜赌如命，如今已带着全部的积蓄离家出走；两个孩子都还小，一家人挤在简陋的房子中。
为了抚养孩子，归还房贷，蕾·艾迪决定铤而走险，参与非法移民活动以赚取“外快”。这是一项充满危险的活动，她不禁要时时提防警察的盘查，而且路途上也一直充满了艰辛。此时，另一个单身妈妈利拉找到了她，半威胁、半恳求地与蕾·艾迪成为了搭档。
她们开始了共同跨越已经结冰的圣劳伦斯河的旅程：一路冰雪，一路危机，一路紧张，一路抗争……两个“绝望”主妇，为了各自的目标全力在冰河的旅途上行进，去处理一个又一个紧急的状况，并在险象环生中捍卫着自己的尊严和价值。
