劇情
這是一個天才釣魚少年的故事，懷舊原生風景、神奇電腦特效，奧斯卡導演瀧田洋二郎的最新作品將為今春吹來一股颯爽的風。
在充滿自然氣息的河邊，每年夏天的垂釣大賽今年也如期舉行，力壓群雄贏得冠軍的是年僅十三歲的三平三平。
三平是個性格開朗的平凡少年，他和爺爺──著名釣魚高手──生活在一起。憑借與生俱來的天賦和爺爺的指導，三平的釣魚技術變得越來越好了。暑假到了，每天三平都和青梅竹馬的女孩高山百合一起去河邊垂釣。
活躍在美國的職業釣魚選手鯰川魚紳注意到了這位年少的冠軍，他告訴三平，在夜泣谷裡有一種巨大的怪魚，令三平躍躍欲試。
三平正準備和魚紳一起去“傳說的樂園”夜泣谷釣怪魚，一直住在東京的姐姐愛子回了老家。她希望三平能接受好的學校教育，想把他帶去東京。一平提出：“如果三平能釣到怪魚，那就讓他走自己想走的路吧。”愛子也接受了這個提議。于是，一行人出發前往夜泣谷。
傳說中的大怪魚真的存在麼？三平能釣到它麼？
追尋傳說和夢想的少年的冒險拉開了帷幕……
