2006年由狮门公司发行的英国恐怖片《黑暗侵袭》讲述六个女子在进行洞穴探索时遭遇秘洞怪物疯狂噬人，更为可怕的是，六人在面临危难之际，开始意识到：最危险的竟是自己身边的朋友。《黑暗侵袭》由尼尔·马歇尔导演，与以往典型英式恐怖片路数一致，将杀戮与血腥飙到极致，令人胆寒，而对于人性的挖掘又让这部貌似寻常的恐怖片多了些许深度，因此获得不少好评，续集将承接前作的惨烈风格，不惜变本加厉，从剧照上看，将狂洒血浆的作风发扬光大，“洞穴怪物”的造型则更为骸人。
接棒导演一职的为Jon Harris，这也是他的电影长片处女作，剪接师出身的他，对于影片节奏的掌控可谓驾轻就熟，此前他担任剪接的恐怖片《伊甸湖》赢得不俗口碑，为他此次执导《黑暗侵袭2》积累了丰富的经验。主演肖娜·麦克唐纳德、娜塔莉·杰克逊·门多萨等均为前作原班人马。
故事接着上一集的结睦尾开始。在洞穴失踪人员营救队的搜寻一无所获之时，精神恍惚、满身是血的莎拉一个人出现在阿巴拉契亚山脉的洞穴附近，这对营救队和她自己来说都是个奇迹，然而遍体鳞伤的她却又对发生的事情无法解释。警察怀疑她杀害了其他五位同伴，为了调查真相，一队营救人员带着莎拉重返洞穴。在队伍深入洞穴时，莎拉突然想起洞穴里曾经发生过的事，只有她一个人知道潜伏在黑暗深处的恐怖，她同时意识到营救队伍即将面对的那些未知的洞穴怪物，他们比之前的怪物更加畸形、更加凶猛骇人，剧中主角的全面复活又将与怪物们进行怎样的一场血腥肉搏呢？
