>A good compilation from the endless supplies of ethnic music at King Records, this is part of the Music of Japanese People series. The musical works of Okinawa are quite lively, and unique from the rest of Japanese music in many ways. The most noticeable instrument is a type of lute, in sound mildly similar to the Japanese shamisen, but played in a rather more galloping manner. Performers on this album come from all of the major schools of Okinawan music (classical, folk, etc.), and the album is thus quite representative of the major forms in play at the time of the recordings. Anyone wondering what music is like in the land of karate's origin should definitely check out this album.
