忠直仁厚的當紅股票經紀方進新（劉松仁）與貧窮粗鄙的丁蟹（鄭少秋）相交數十年，卻被蟹衝動下殺死，從此方家一落千丈，新遺下四個子女，幸得繼室羅惠玲（藍潔瑛）照顧，而蟹則流落台灣。
十多年後，進新長子展博（劉青雲）長大成人，但卻一直投閒置散。後得父舊友葉天（羅樂林）教誨，正欲發奮圖強之際，得悉蟹已潛逃返港，他誓要為父討回公道，奈何丁家兒子孝蟹（邵仲衡），利蟹（陶大宇）等為黑社會大哥，勢力龐大。博幾經奔走，終使蟹被判極刑！但連串噩夢亦因而展開：先是幼妹敏（楊羚）不堪壓力而跳樓，甚至大妹芳（吳詠虹）以及曾與孝相戀之二妹婷（李麗珍）亦難逃厄運。至此，博唯有遠走台灣。
另一方面，蟹以患癌為理由，獲提早假釋出獄。雖失意於舊情人玲，事業卻一帆風順，更有意進軍股票界，時博得退休毒梟周濟生（劉江），退休華探長龍成邦（曾江）之助，偕紅顏知己阮梅（周慧敏）及龍成邦之女龍紀文（郭藹明）回港，並聯同婷好友陳滔滔（林保怡）秘密部署，擬把股票市場變成宰殺丁蟹的屠場……
